The Saeco Pure grinds, tamps, and brews an excellent espresso or lungo. It does not have the fancy digital display that its other counterparts have, but I like this. I don’t want to scroll through menus on a digital screen to get to my coffee! I want to push the button that says espresso and make it happen. That’s exactly what this machine does! The grinder is a great addition to the machine and does the job nicely. The milk frother is foolproof. Even I was able to make a good cappuccino with this. It also spouts out hot water for all you Americano fans. I have thoroughly enjoyed having this machine.

The SAECO Pure Automatic Espresso Machine is a great espresso machine. What I really like about this super automatic is that there are NO digital menus to scroll through. What you get are large buttons displayed with what it is you want. Want an espresso? Press the button that has an espresso symbol on it (cup half full). Want a lungo? Press the Lungo button (cup completely full). Listen to the grinder grind the beans and wait about 30 seconds and you have your satisfaction.

The unit is made of plastic and I was apprehensive about this at first, thinking it may be cheap, but it’s not. The plastic is quite thick and I think will last the test of time. The wand (for making frothed milk drinks) does an excellent job of frother milk. If fact, it is almost too good (almost) in that you get a heavy foam before the milk is fully heated. This can be remedied by either heating your milk a little prior to using the wand or just using less milk (or get a bigger pitcher) – so, it’s not a drawback from the machine. I really like that the grinder doesn’t make too much noise. Comparing it to my cuisinart, which is as loud as a train coming through my house, this is super quiet. The machine has lights to let you know when you’re out of beans, out of water, or need to empty the grounds.

Overall, I like the machine. It makes a good cup of coffee, espresso or cappuccino. You can adjust the grinder to your liking to control the strength of the coffee. It does require more maintenance than your basic coffee maker though. Whether it stays or goes will depend on how difficult the weekly/monthly cleaning are and if my wife will put up with the lost counter space. After seeing her reaction to the cappuccino I made her tonight, I think it may be staying…

Update: I learned that I can program the cup size dispensed by holding either size cup button. It flashes and starts dispensing. Then press again to make it stop. After that, the new cup size is memorized. A word of caution is the more water you use, the weaker the coffee will be. You could experiment with the grinding fineness to compensate for this. As I mentioned, this machine is so fast you can just press the button twice rapidly and it will run two consecutive brewing sequences which won’t affect coffee strength.

Update after a month of use:

The weekly cleaning of this machine is much easier than the manual made it seem. It took all of 10 minutes and I was proceeding slowly.

I’ve found a few quirks with this machine that concern me. First, there is a cup inside that holds the used grounds. They are compressed into small hockey pucks. When the cup becomes full, you get a warning light on the display and the machine will not function until you empty the cup. It’s a great idea but here’s the problem. On several occasions, the light has come on with only 2 pucks in the cup. So that means only 2 cups of coffee had been made since the cup was empty. The light should not come on as the cup is nowhere near full. It’s a minor inconvenience and the light has reset after emptying the cup. Often times just opening and closing the drawer clears the error.
